Norfolk County is Canada's top pumpkin grower. As Canadians carve their jack o' lanterns and bake their pumpkin pies this fall, chances are their pumpkins came from Norfolk County. Norfolk County is located 90 minutes southwest of Toronto.
Located along Ontario's South Coast, Lake Erie, Norfolk County is considered Ontario's Garden, because Statistics Canada indicates farmers there grow the largest volume and most diverse selection of fruit and vegetables in the country.
According to the latest agricultural census, Norfolk County farmers grew 1,795 acres of pumpkins. Acreage for the crop has decreased slightly over the past five years, but Norfolk County remains the leading pumpkin-growing region in Ontario.
Many sizes, colours and shapes of pumpkins can be purchased at farm markets across Norfolk County, as well as at farmers markets in Simcoe on Thursdays and Port Dover on Saturdays.
The famous Erie Beach Hotel in Port Dover also serves pickled pumpkin on its menu, made by hand using Norfolk County pumpkins. A recipe for the restaurant's pickled pumpkin is available in the latest edition of the Norfolk County Recipe Book.
